Visit the island’s cultural capital of Yogyakarta or head to the hills and Bandung where tropical heat is tempered enough to grow tea. Visit Badui villages for a glimpse at an unchanging culture or take a peak at the legendary Krakatoa.
Semarang in central Java has an interesting Chinatown and Yogyakarta is the perfect base from which to visit Borobudor and Prambanan and soak up some culture.
Head to the 2000m-high Dieng Plateau to visit amazing temples, lakes and terraces then on to east Java and the mind-blowing Mt Bromo – a still smoking volcano that sits in an eery lunar landscape.
