It’s in Istanbul that you can wander the historic Sultanahmet quarter to explore the harems of past sultans in Topkapi Palace, wonder at the domes in the Aya Sofya and famous Blue Mosque or explore the famous underground Roman cisterns. There are many markets throughout the city but the most famous are the spice bazaar - the Misir Çarşı, and the elaborate and extensive Grand Bazaar where you can hone your haggling skills bargaining for brightly-coloured kilims and carpets.

Before setting off into Anatolia and the rest of Turkey’s wonders take a ferry ride across the famous Bosphorus to the gates of Asia; take the tram up to Taksim for some shopping and climb the Galata Tower from where the city’s justifiably famous skyline of domes and minarets is revealed.
