Largest of Japan’s islands Honshu is home to the imperial cities of Tokyo and Kyoto, along with the volcanic cone that is Mt Fuji.

If in the north of the island head to Nikko , one of the most historic towns in Japan with a well-preserved old centre. The Japanese Alps attract walkers with the mountains a year round destination – plenty of snow means a vibrant winter sports scene – head to Furukawa, Matsumoto and Takayama.

No visit to Japan would be complete without a visit to Kyoto, described as a living museum, and whose monuments today are on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Nara was Japan’s first Imperial city and is home to Todai-ji temple. Whilst famous for being bombed a visit to the Peace Park in Hiroshima is worthwhile. Then there’s the main cities of Osaka and Tokyo, both of which are to be included on most visitor’s itineraries – Tokyo for the vibrancy of the country’s capital and Osaka with its castle and the Sumiyoshi Taisha.

Mt Fuji is the classic volcano, occasionally visible from Tokyo, and best seen from Hakone. You can walk on and even climb the mountain.
