Many visitors to Guatemala make a brief visit across the Honduras border to visit the ancient Mayan City of Copan. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980 it is the most studied Mayan city in the world.

The west Honduran region, which takes its name from the ruins of Copan abuts Guatemala and is home to colonial towns and villages, national parks, lakes, caves and hot springs. Its highland mountains are one of the world’s renowned coffee growing regions and are dotted with coffee farms which produce high quality shade grown coffee.

Nearby natural attractions include the Celaque National Park, one of the largest tracts of cloud forest left in Central America; Lake Yojoa, ideal for fishing, boating and bird-watching and the thermal springs of Agua Caliente.

Up in the highlands, the wonderful city of Santa Rosa de Copan is famous for the production of excellent hand rolled cigars and the cobbled streets and restored buildings of its historical centre are now a National Monument.
