Himachal Pradesh is a mountainous state located in the western Himalayas of northwest India which covers 56,019 km². Shimla is the state capital, once a summer getaway of the British Raj, the city is a popular destination with neo-gothic architecture and dense forests of pine, rhododendron, and oak.
This is a region of huge contrasts in landscape and climate. Elevation ranges from 350m up to 6000m which accounts for the huge variation in climate, from the hot and sub-tropical south to the alpine conditions of the northern and eastern mountain ranges. Its landscape varies greatly too, from high-altitude Trans-Himalayan desert, dense forests, cultivated terraces to snow capped Himalayan mountain ranges, snow fed lakes and rivers.
Wildlife is prolific here with many animal and bird species such as leopards, ghoral, snow leopard, musk deer (the state animal) and the western tragopan (the state bird). The area contains 12 major national parks and sanctuaries including the Great Himalayan National Park, founded to conserve the flora and fauna of the main Himalayan range, and Pin Valley National Park, whose aim is to conserve the flora and fauna of the cold desert.
