Khartoum is one of the 26 ‘wilayat’ or states of Sudan and is also the national capital. Khartoum provides the meeting point of the White and Blue Nile Rivers – from where the River Nile continues its journey north into Egypt to eventually spill into the Mediterranean Sea.
Omdurman and Khartoum North are other major urban centres in this state, which is also the smallest state of Sudan.
