Glance at a map of India and let your eyes drift down the west coast and its easy to miss the former Portuguese colony of Goa. Ties to the former powers remain strong - they left only in 1961 - and this is most noticeable in the surnames of local people, the wonderful food and the Goan architecture. Today is is best known for its wonderful beaches such as Colva Beach, Anjuna Beach - famous for Anjuna Flea Market - Calangute, Baga and Palolem, and its laid-back lifestyle, but there's much to see and do besides soaking up the rays.
Head to Old Goa to admire what is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its wonderful, well-preserved churches, wander Panaji's old lanes, lined with Portuguese gems, the temples around Ponda as well as Molem and Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary.
