The El Peten region, located in the north of the country, is dotted with the remains of ancient Mayan cities surrounded by lush jungle. The most renowned of these is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Tikal; spread over six square miles with more than 3,000 structures including palaces, temples, ceremonial platforms, ball courts and plazas. Nearby is Tikal National Park, home to wide variety of wildlife including howler monkeys, brocket deer, coati-mundis and toucans.
From here you can travel to the ancient Mayan city of Yaxha, located in the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, the site has been declared a Natural & Cultural Monument of the country.
The charming island city of Flores, surrounded by Lake Peten Itza, has a relaxed and laid back feel with its cobbled streets and historic church. To see the city from a different perspective and explore the surrounding area you can take a boat trip around the lake or take part in a canopy tour.
For those who enjoy getting off the beaten track, a visit to the remote ancient city of El Mirador, located deep in the jungle, will take a few days of hiking and camping whilst the Petexbatun lake area surrounded by the three ancient sites of Dos Pilas, Aguateca and Ceibal, can be reached by a boat followed by a hike through the jungle.
