Eastern Uganda is not only home to the Source of the Nile and some of the best rafting in the world at Jinja, but also gives rise to Mt. Elgon, a 4,321m high extinct volcano which in prehistoric times stood taller than Kilimanjaro does today. Nowadays it is growing in popularity as a destination for trekkers with spectacular scenery of waterfalls, gorges and mountain vistas. The Kenyan border lies not far away and many travellers pass through this region en route to Nairobi.
