Eastern Turkey is a forbidding land of steppe, timeless villages and extremes of climate however rewards the country’s most intrepid travellers with sights the like of are to be found nowhere else on earth. From the abandoned ghost city of Ani on the Armenian border to the dreamy fortress-like palace of Işakpaşa there are buildings to draw gasps of wonder.

Looming large in every sense is Mt Ararat a mountain that guards eastern border with Iran whilst further north lie the lower Kaçkar Mountains, which draw trekkers and walkers keen to explore a remote and beautiful landscape and meet locals as they walk. The raging Çoruh River brings increasing numbers of white-water rafters keen to test their skills against what is one of the world’s top-ten rafting rivers.

The jewel in the crown for many is Lake Van where the sight of the Church of the Holy Cross on Akdamar Island reflected in the ever-changing colours of the lake is unforgettable.
