Eastern Nepal is a dramatic, forbidding area of amazing beauty, the land of the Sherpas. Here the highest mountains of the world await those lucky enough to be able to make a visit with giants such as Lhotse and Nuptse framing the highest mountain in the world, Everest or Sagarmatha as it is called locally. Prayer flags flutter from chortens and the flat-roofed houses indicate the strong Tibetan connection of the Solu-Khumbu region whilst, further east the massif that is Kanchenjunga looms on the horizon.
A trek to Everest Base Camp is almost a pilgrimage for many experienced walkers, following in the footsteps of the great climbers and yet the natural beauty is equalled by the hospitality of the local people: walking is and always has been a way of life here as elsewhere in Nepal and the locals know how to look after foot-sore trekkers.
On the border with India, Kanchenjunga rises to 8598m and dominates the little-visited far east of the country. A trek here to the foot of the 3rd highest mountain in the world requires determination, strength, time and stamina in equal proportions for it’s a long way from Kathmandu. The rewards are, as is so often the case, well worth the effort.
Here too there is white-water action for adrenaline lovers with the Sun Kosi River providing thrills aplenty, whilst the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve provides a haven for the endangered arna or wild buffalo as well as over 400 species of birds.
