Known locally as the Oriente, Eastern Cuba incorporates the provinces of Las Tunas, Holguin, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantanamo.

A region of rainforest draped mountains, wetland areas, vast beaches and rich agriculture, it was here that Columbus first landed and described the Island as “the most beautiful eyes have ever seen”.

Birthplace of Fidel Castro, the Oriente is often described as the soul of Cuba and many of its cities, such as Holguin and Santiago de Cuba are steeped in history, with beautiful colonial buildings, shady squares, ornate churches and vibrant centres. Santiago is perhaps the liveliest of all, with music and dance a seemingly endless fixture of this elegant fortified town. Don’t miss the Carnival in July if you enjoy those rumba beats!

Several smaller towns, such as Baracoa and Manzanillo offer wonderful retreats for those wishing to escape the larger cities, and the countryside offers forests, waterfalls, lakes and mountains, such as the Sierra Maestra which are great for hiking and trekking.

The notorious US base at Guantanamo is located towards the south of the Oriente, and those on the revolutionary trail can visit the sites where Fidel and his bandits began their Cuban Revolution.
