Eastern China – from Tianjin to Guangzhou – encompasses what is for many the China of their imaginations. There are paddy fields and small villages, holy mountains such as Tai Shan and Huangshan that are familiar from Chinese paintings and the gardens of Suzhou with their wonderfully relaxing and utterly oriental designs.

Here too are the powerhouses of the economy – tigers such as Shanghai, today a formidable trading city again and yet incredibly Western in its approach to life – and the Grand Canal which created much wealth travels north from Hangzhou. Qufu is where Confucious lived and places such as Fuzhou and Quanzhou have much to seeas does delightful Xiamen with its traffic-free Gulanyu Island.
