The far western region of Crete is home to the beautiful Venetian Port of Chania (Hania), the regional capital.

Much of the area is made up of the impressive White Mountains (Lefka Ori), where the cool, green Omalos Plateau can be found and towering peaks loom down on narrow canyons, such as the famous Samaria Gorge.

Beautiful white villages, such as Loutro and Agia Romeli, line the southern coastline, where there are few roads and access is often by foot or by boat.

The lonely Gramvoussa and Rodopou Peninsulas jut out to the north and offer excellent walking and impressive beaches. Here too can be found the important archaeological site of Falasarna.

Chora Sfakion and Paleochora are the departure points to Gavdos, the most southern island in Greece.
