The upland area of Turkey known as the Anatolian Plateau has been formed in part by the action of colliding tectonic plates and volcanoes. This is the land of the dramatic Aladağlar Mountains beloved of trekkers in the know, and Cappadocia which, whilst having its own superb walking, is better known as a strange moonscape of fairy chimneys and rock carved churches which sit atop underground cities.
The nation’s capital, Ankara, reveals an ancient citadel in which a Turkish village can be found and the city has a superb museum, whilst to the south lies Konya, home of the Whirling Dervishes and the beautiful tomb of their revered founder, Mevlana.
Other highlights include Hattuša, capital of the important Hittite civilisation and whose remains are a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and Divriği, where a mosque and hospital complex rewards visitors who make the difficult journey to discover it.
