Inland, away from the Indian Ocean coast, Mauritius offers some great hiking in the wild and beautiful Black River Gorges National Park. On this upland plateau, dramatic mountain scenery competes with rolling tea plantations, extensive sugar cane fields and an ancient volcanic crater. The charming country towns of Curepipe and Rose Hill offer an alternative base from which to explore the island as a whole. Quatre Bornes has an interesting twice-weekly market. Looming over the island capital of Port Louis, the Moka mountain range fringes the plateau with an ascent of Le Pouce peak providing a pleasant half day hike.
