East of Amman a shimmering, rocky desert stretches towards Jordan’s famous ‘desert castles’. These fortifications are believed to have been staging posts or meeting places and, in the case of Qas’r Amra, a bath-house and hunting lodge for an Ommayed Caliph. The nearby oasis-like town of Azraq has pools of water that support wildlife in a Wetlands Reserve and not far away is the Shaumari Wildlife Reserve where endangered animals such as oryx and ostrich can be seen.
To the southwest of Amman lies Madaba, famous for its mosaics, and Mt Nebo which has biblical associations. The Dead Sea lies in a crack in the Rift Valley surface some 400m below sea-level providing for a salty bathing experience.
The winding King’s Highway was once a trading route bringing spices from Arabia Felix and is still in use today making a much prettier route to the south than the motorway-like Desert Highway. At Kerak visitors can explore Kerak’s famous Crusader castle then head to the wilderness area of Dana National Park, a seldom-visited treasure where a stay rewards with great views and the opportunity for some rewarding trekking, as well as the opportunity to ‘give something back to the local people’, it operating a sustainable tourism policy.
