Central Cuba offers visitors the opportunity to get off the beaten track and discover some of the country’s less visited areas, as well as some of the most important places to visit in the country.

Incorporating the provinces of Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spiritus, Ciego de Avila, and Camaguey, much of this region is made up of rural farmland, were fields of sugar cane stand alongside citrus trees, and cows graze in rural pastures. Several natural parks and reserves can be found in here, including Topes de Collentes which offers great walking in the Sierra del Escambray, and several lakes that are popular for fishing and boating, such as Lago Hanabanilla and Laguna la Redonda.

The many beaches and Cayes along the coastlines of the region are breathtaking, with one of the world’s most pristine coral reefs lying nearby. The Archipelago Jardines de la Reina lies to the south, matched by Archipelagos Jardin del Rey and Sabana in the north. These include some of the most fabulous northern Cayes - Cayo las Brujas, Cayo Santa Maria, Cayo Coco, Cayo Guillermo, amongst many others, are much treasured places to scuba dive. A series of impressive causeways link some of the Cayes to make one of the most amazing driving experiences anywhere.

A firm favourite of the Central region of Cuba is the beautifully restored 16th Century UNESCO World Heritage town of Trinidad, but the colonial centres of Cienfuegos, Remidios and Camaguey are also great places to spend time. Vibrant Santa Clara is also home to the Che Memorial and the revolutionary hero’s ashes.

With fewer tourists than the main centres of the country, Central Cuba is a wonderful place to meet and mingle with local people and immerse oneself in Cuban life.
