From Xian and the Terracotta Warriors in the north to Guilin and Yangshuo’s poetic landscapes in the south this is the heartland of China. Great cities are treasure houses of history and majestic rivers such as the Li carve a landscape that is immediately recognisable from a thousand photographs.
It’s here in central China that you’ll discover Luoyang with its famous Shaolin Temple and Longmen Caves, Chengdu - famous for its Panda Reserve and Leshan’s huge Buddha. Climb Mt Emai, a holy mountain, and paddle a bamboo raft on the Li River past sugarloaf peaks at Guilin or Yangshuo before witnessing the dramatic Longji rice terraces. Finally head down the Yangtse River on a cruise to the Three Gorges.
