Vibrant and cosmopolitan Guatemala City is the gateway to the central and east region of Guatemala. Its contrasting regions of the cool and misty mountains of Alta Verapaz and the hot, dry-tropic climate of Baja Verapaz lead to the ancient Maya site of Cancuen and the Candelaria Cave, one of the most important caves in this region and at 30 km long one of the two largest caves in the Americas.
Guatemala’s most-famous river, the Rio Dulce, is fed by the country’s largest lake, Lake Izabal which is surrounded by lush jungle and is home more than 600 species of birds.
A boat trip down the river will take you to the Biotopo de Chacon Machacas, established to protect the elusive manatee which thrive in these waters. At the most easterly point of the region is the lively town of Livingston located on Guatemala’s Caribbean coast.
The region is dotted with impressive ancient sites, national monuments and nature reserves such as the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Quirigua, once an important Mayan city, and the El Biotopo de Quetzal reserve which offers amazing hiking trails through cloud forest and is home to the rare Quetzal, the national bird and symbol of Guatemala.
