Belize’s interior is vast and wild, dominated and defined by the majestic Maya Mountains that rise to 3000 ft (900m) and are the location or source of nearly all Cayo’s attractions. The rivers that rise in them have shaped one of the world’s largest cave systems that in the past were used by the Maya as ceremonial centres, and today are eerie and atmospheric places for visitors. These rivers, waterfalls and pools are also ideal for kayaking, rafting, inner-tubing or just cooling off after a jungle hike.
The Maya appreciated the value of riverside and mountain locations and some of their most important cities, such as Xunantunich and Caracol can be found in the area.
The inaccessibility of the mountains has meant that much of the native flora and fauna has remained untouched and is now preserved in a series of fabulous national parks, ideal for the serious or casual naturalist.
To help you take advantage of the natural wonders of the area, there is a well-developed service industry offering luxurious jungle lodges, 4-wheel drive tours, caving, horseback riding, mountain biking, herbal treatments. The list is endless, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to enjoy this superb destination.
