Belize’s Barrier Reef stretches for 300km and is home to dozens of ‘cayes’ (pronounced ‘keez’) which consist of everything from the most deserted spit of sand and palms to Ambergris Caye, the original Isla Bonita and home of San Pedro, the most developed side of Belize tourism.

Nonetheless, Belize’s resorts are still wonderfully small-scale compared to nearby Mexican and Caribbean destinations, and manage to maintain the laidback air for which the whole country is famous. Whether you choose to stay in swanky Ambergris, more budget-oriented Caye Caulker, or at one of the secluded lodges on other smaller cayes, you are always just minutes from world-class diving and snorkelling offshore.

Further afield, but accessible in a day, are Turneffe Island and Lighthouse Reef Atolls, geographical phenomena that feature spectacular wall diving, and Jacques Cousteau’s old favourite, the Blue Hole.
