Tropical beaches and National Parks

The vast majority of the coastline of Honduras is on the Caribbean side of the country and this is where you will find the most beautiful tropical beaches. Tela, just a short distance from San Pedro Sula's international airport, is a rising star when it comes to beach holidays. Its picture-postcard beaches and smaller visitor numbers when compared to the Bay Islands make it an ideal place to relax.

But this coastline is not just limited to beach paradises; you can also explore tropical forests that extend up into the mountains. Much of these green areas are protected by national parks and wildlife reserves, such as the Pico Bonito National Park near La Ceiba.

The coast blends modern cities, colonial towns and Garifuna villages and the contrasts will be striking if you travel from one to another. All are now mostly populated by the Garifuna who have a heavy influence on the northern coastline and its Spanish colonial cities.

Why Travel to Caribbean Coastline of Honduras?

  • The diversity of the Pico Bonito National Park is something to behold. Seven distinct ecosystems covering 0-7500 feet, rivers, wildlife and an ecolodge will leave nature lovers satisfied.
  • One of the best places in the country to meet the Garifuna and get some insight into their culture, traditions and history. The local village of Miami is still entirely constructed from traditional materials.
  • The sparely populated La Mosquitia on the extreme east of the Caribbean coast is home to the largest tract of virgin rainforest in the northern half of the Americas as well as home to several indigenous tribes.
