The Black Sea coast is the garden of Turkey, a green land with plentiful water and, surprising to many, much to recommend it. Here the harbour city of Trabzon has its own Aya Sofya and the cliff-hanging Sumela Monastery whose construction almost defies imagination. Further west and Safranbolu, now recognized as a World Heritage Site, has an unrivalled collection of Ottoman-era mansions and some great rambling.
