Although Belize City and Northern Belize are seldom a main focus of most travellers’ attention, they still boast the wonderfully compact mix of archaeological, scenic, cultural and natural attractions for which Belize is famous.
Belize City, with its international airport, is the gateway to the rest of the country but, having been the cultural, political and economic capital of Belize for most of its history is worth a closer look.
Within a short drive or boat ride, one can be amongst howler monkeys, manatees, jabirus, nurse sharks and an astonishing variety of other wildlife or out to sea to mangroves, coral reef, and atoll beaches.
Travellers who head north, towards Orange Walk and Corozal will find wetlands, remote national parks, farmland, jungle and lost cities. And whichever way you turn, visitors will find evidence of a rich Mayan, Colonial and post-Colonial past.
