Most people on their first visit to the Azores will spend a week on the main and largest island, Sao Miguel, which offers a great introduction to the archipelago with its 3 spectacular crater lakes, boiling pools, endemic vegetation and hydrangea hedgerows.

Santa Maria is much quieter and offers sandy beaches, the highest number of sunshine hours and spectacular bays.

These islands are linked by an irregular ferry service and daily flights.

The islands cover the following square kms: Sao Miguel – 746km2, Santa Maria – 97km2.
