The central group is made up of 5 islands and offers the widest variety of landscapes and experiences of the Azores.

Terceira is famous for its beautiful UNESCO world heritage town of Angra and its bull running traditions, Graciosa is a tiny rural island where some excellent wines are produced and visitors can descend into its heart to stand inside the 80m high vault.

Sao Jorge is a walkers paradise being a long thin island with a spine peppered with green craters. Faial and Pico are just 25 minutes boat trip apart and are famous for their whaling past (and now whale watching) and also being a popular stop over point for transatlantic yachtsmen.

These islands are linked by a regular ferry service and daily flights.

The islands cover the following square kms: Terceira – 402km2, Graciosa – 61km2, Sao Jorge – 245km2, Faial – 173km2, Pico – 447km2
