A multitude of offshore islands hug the Northern Peninsula of the Antarctic plateau and offer a diverse range of flora & fauna. With an abundance of natural and green vegetation on the northern isles they also provide an ideal breeding grounds for the prolific birdlife. More austere and ice covered islands are found further south, which hold a beauty of their own in their untouched and pristine landscapes.
This is the most visited part of Antarctica due to it’s relative accessibility by ship from South America and numerous departures of more than 100 a year ensure that their passengers experience the trip of a lifetime. Initially opened and explored by whalers and sealers, this rich and commercial history laid the foundations for future exploration of this region of Antarctica.
The legacies from these periods in time can still be seen today. Although the Weddell Sea is far less explored by visiting ships due to the ever present danger of pack ice, a journey down through the islands on the western side of the peninsula ensures that it is a journey never forgotten.
