Those in search of what is probably the world’s best example of a medieval Middle Eastern souk should head straight to Aleppo, where the miles of vaulted passageways, amazing khans and mosques will transport you immediately to another world.

Looking above the souk is the dramatic Citadel, crowning a hill in the centre of town and looking out over the city towards the Dead Cities and the famous St Simeon’s Monastery.

On the outskirts of Aleppo, beehive-shaped houses can be seen as one heads east to Rasafa, a crystalline desert city where martyrs once laid down their lives.

The north of Syria contains some of the country’s must see treasure and is a hit with everyone who visits.
