With dramatic multi-brown scenery of deep gorges, sheer, cliff-edged mesas, moving sand dunes, camels and oases of date palms, the Adrar Plateau is classic Sahara. This is the region where any traveller to Mauritania should head to discover the real highlights of the country. The icing on the cake for many are the ancient settlements of Chinguetti and Ouadane - World Heritage listed in 1996 as part of the Ancient Ksour of Ouadane, Chinguetti, Tichitt and Oualata. For desert wilderness, dramatic scenery and a touch of culture you won't go far wrong on the Adrar Plateau.
