The Kianh Foundation

Helping Disadvantaged Children in Hoi An

The Kianh Foundation is a small UK charity helping disabled and disadvantaged children at Hoi An Orphanage in Hoi An, Central Vietnam. It has had a permanent presence at Hoi An Orphanage since 2002 and is the only organisation working full-time there to improve the lives of the children.

The Vietnamese Government own and run Hoi An Orphanage. We work alongside the authorities and aim to improve the health, education and quality of life for the children there. We currently have 80 children in our care (the number fluctuates regularly), 37 of whom have a range of physical and intellectual disabilities, mainly cerebral palsy-related. We are striving to help each of them achieve their greatest potential in life, whatever that may be.

Unfortunately there is limited government funds available to support the children at Hoi An Orphanage. With the help of its supporters, the Kianh Foundation has therefore funded, and hopes to continue funding, the major projects at the orphanage, with particular emphasis on the children with disabilities. These projects include the employment of 12 local Vietnamese people, provision of medicines and arrangement of surgeries, nutrition improvement, special education, further education support; providing and running a school room and play room for disabled children, physiotherapy and building maintenance and repairs.

Visiting

Visitors are welcome between 08:00hrs and 10:00hrs and 14:00hrs and 16:00hrs. Vietnam is a conservative society and Hoi An Orphanage is run by the local communist government, so please ensure that you dress appropriately: no short shorts or flimsy tops.

Please DO NOT bring sweets and biscuits! We have spent considerable time and money on the children’s dental care. Fruit is far better, and is enjoyed as much.

Speech Therapy and Special Education experience sought
We are allowed to have two full-time volunteers at Hoi An Orphanage at any one time. We are looking for volunteers in the area of speech therapy, and volunteers to assist one of our special education teachers working with severely disabled children – special education experience is preferred, but not essential. Please visit the website to learn about how you can really make a difference to the lives of the children who live in the orphange.

Support Needed

As a non-profit organisation, we rely solely on voluntary donations to continue our projects at the orphanage. We currently do not receive any government grants, loans or funding support. Please  visit our website - www.kianh.org.uk and click the justgiving logo to make a secure, online donation to our work, using your credit or debit card.

Why not consider making a regular donation to support one of our hard-working Vietnamese staff? Sponsoring a staff member is a key area in which your hard-earned funds can have the most positive, and long-lasting impact on the lives of the children in our care.
