The South Atlantic Ocean begins at the Equator and covers all the waters of the Atlantic Ocean that lie in the Southern Hemisphere. Bordered to the west by South America and the east by Africa, the South Atlantic sometimes becomes known as the Southern Ocean as it stretches south to Antarctica.

The waters to the south are particularly fascinating, as the cool waters of Antarctica rise from deep ocean trenches to meet the warmer waters of the north, the waters are rich in marine life. Pacific waters meet the South Atlantic in the Drake Passage, making the region legendary amongst seafarers, and as the currents pass below the horn of Africa, they become part of the Indian Ocean.

Within this vast marine world lie a number of small islands, which have been particularly important in the days of maritime history, whaling and Polar Exploration. These islands include Tristan da Cunha (UK), South Georgia (UK), South Orkney Islands (UK), South Sandwich Islands (UK), South Shetland Islands (UK), Prince Edwards Island (SA) and the Falkland Islands (UK).
