Scattered across the Pacific Ocean and comprising over 1,000 islands, the islands of Polynesia are truly exotic, often exclusive and in many cases very difficult to reach. Generally regarded as a triangle with corners at New Zealand, Easter Island and Hawaii, Polynesia has numerous island groups and chains, each with its own distinct cultures and traditions.
Main island groups include Tonga and Samoa, the Cook Islands and French Polynesia. Niue sits alone as a solitary island state towards the centre of the region. For most, the must-see destination of this region is New Zealand – a breathtaking country of soaring peaks, lakes, rivers, glaciers and rich farmlands. Activities and adventures abound on the north and south islands of New Zealand.
In the far north of Polynesia, just south of the Tropic of Cancer, can be found the Hawaiian Islands. Now a State of the US, Hawaii is still very much Polynesian and offers dramatic and active volcanic scenery, dense jungle and a diverse mix of people across the islands. Ideal for self-drive, these must-see islands also have adrenaline activities galore.
