Travelling on an adventure holiday in Asia is one of the best ways of learning about what is one of the world's most intriguing areas. Off the menu for generations countries such as China, Japan and Mongolia are now opening up, and intrepid travellers have a whole new region to discover.
With over 50 minority nationalities China is surprisingly cosmopolitan, so you can now mix tribal encounters with the Great Wall of China and Terracotta Warriors, and visits to Lijiang with the poetic landscapes of Guilin. Holy mountains like Mt Ermei provide landscapes recognisable from Chinese paintings and, in the east, Shanghai is a not to be missed dynamo.
Once a byword for remoteness the mysterious land of Genghis Khan, Mongolia, is a destination where adventure travel flourishes. Here you can sleep in the tradition ger as you explore the steppe and the Gobi Desert. Visit Karakorum and the wonderful monastery Erdene Zu taking in the mid-summer Nadaam festival if at all possible.
Japan meanwhile blends modernity with ancient traditions, a country where neon blazes and yet temple bells ring. The 4 main islands each have their own attractions with Honshu perhaps most-visited. See or even climb Mt Fuji and head to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. There are walking and trekking opportunities and hot springs all over Japan along with traditional Zen gardens and dramatic shogun-era castles.
