Extending south of the Equator to the Tropic of Capricorn and to the north and northeast of Australia, Melanesia includes the states of Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji. Melanesia was a term first used by Jules Dumont d'Urville in 1832 to denote an ethnic and geographical grouping of islands distinct from Polynesia and Micronesia.
One destination holds particular appeal for adventurous travellers seeking off-beat and little-visited destinations – Papua New Guinea. A natural paradise of dense jungle, stunning coral reefs and mist covered mountains, Papua New Guinea is home to the largest area of intact rainforest outside of the Amazon and to the famous 'Birds of Paradise'. This fascinating land boasts more than 800 indigenous languages and over 1,000 different cultures, giving a rich cultural diversity.
Elsewhere in Melanesia - Fiji, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and New Caledonia offer tropical paradise holidays (very popular with Australian travellers), with palm-lined beaches, an amazing underwater world and a choice of high standard accommodation for travellers seeking an idyllic Pacific Ocean retreat.
