Central Asia seizes the imagination with images of Mongolian warriors sweeping across the steppe and Silk Road traders battling deserts and mountains as they head West. These two periods of history have helped shape the great Central Asian nations, with Indian and Persian influences adding to the mix.

Uzbekistan is a favourite amongst adventure travellers, home to the fabulous cities of Samarkand and Bukhara, whilst neighbouring Kyrgyzstan has the trekking and climbing of the jaw-dropping Tien Shan, Lake Issyk-Kul, and historical remains dating from the height of the Silk Road. Travellers often combine the two countries, heading into China over the remote Torugart Pass.

The other countries of the region - Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan - wait patiently for their wonders to be discovered by more intrepid travellers who can expect to discover astounding scenery, friendly people, timeless bazaars and more. Holidays, trips and tours to Central Asia are undoubtedly a little off-beat but extremely rewarding.
