Perhaps not on everyone’s list of must-see places, the countries of Central Africa are perhaps more suited to experienced travellers in search of little-visited, challenging and largely undiscovered destinations. Many of the nations in this region remain continually volatile – such as Chad, Central African Republic (C.A.R), Congo and the D.R.C - and a close eye should be kept on travel advice warnings before considering a visit to the region.
In Cameroon, a challenging ascent of Mount Cameroon is rewarded with breathtaking views. Tiny Equatorial Guinea remains frequently in the news following the discovery of vast oil reserves, whilst Gabon has remained stable over the past 30 years and has now set out a blueprint for the preservation of vast tracts of rainforest with the creation of new National Parks and the encouragement of tourism focused on wildlife, lowland gorilla, primate and rainforest experiences.
Laid-back African island retreats – the islands of Sao Tome & Principe lie off the coast of Gabon – and offer fading Portuguese heritage, exotic plantations, black sand beaches, dramatic volcanic rock pinnacles, a varied endemic bird population and rewarding island hikes. Angola is the new kid on the block – recovering from years of civil war, this diverse nation is slowly finding its feet and intrepid travellers are beginning to trickle in to discover a wealth of natural highlights and dramatic scenery.
