Verdant jungle-topped peaks overlook beautiful white beaches and azure waters filled with coral reefs ensure the Caribbean is often described simply as Paradise. The series of some 7,000 tropical islands, isles and cayes are home to a rich Caribbean culture, where a laid-back attitude combines with carnival flair, cricket rouses sporting rivalry and reggae music goes down with a fine glass of rum or a locally hand-rolled cigar.

Supporting exceptionally diverse ecosystems, the islands are a haven for nature lovers.  The Caribbean is home to many rare species, including giant shrews, the Cuban crocodile and the tiny bee hummingbird - the world’s smallest bird. For those who seek activity, excellent hikes as well as a wide range of water activities are possible throughout the region.

The region is bordered by the Greater Antilles in the north, the Lesser Antilles in the east and the coasts of South America and Central America to the south and west. The Guyanas and Suriname in Latin America are also sometimes classed as part of the Caribbean, due to their close connection with Caribbean culture. A strong colonial history and heritage from the slave trade have a strong influence in the area and the main languages are English, French and Dutch.
