Zanzibar’s otherwise known as Unguja's east coast is a major tourist destination due to its pristine beaches however it still retains its local and authentic charm, making it a perfect relaxation destination in Tanzania.

However, if you want more than just lazy days on the beach there are also several small villages to explore from peaceful Paje to traditional Jambiani. With such stunning coastal scenery and a tranquil atmosphere the Zanzibar East Coast is well worth a visit.

Zanzibar was once a separate state with a long trading history within the Arab world but then it united with Tanganyika to form Tanzania in 1964.

Attractions in Zanzibar East Coast

To see what the area has to offer besides its stunning beaches explore the local towns and villages of Paje, Bwejuu, Dongwe, Kae and Jambiani.

Most of these are small fishing villages where you can share the beach with locals, see sheltered lagoons and coral reefs or hire a bicycle to explore the villages. In the crystal clear waters look out for turtles, eels, stingrays and even sharks.

To immerse yourself in the culture here you can visit herbalists, sacred areas and seaweed farms with the local cultural tourism programme which is located in the village of Jambiani.

Zanzibar East Coast’s magnificent beaches and perfect waters lend themselves to water pursuits such as swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. There are even several sheltered lagoons and coves which are ideal for young children to paddle in.

There is a long barrier reef extended along the East Coast where you can see beautiful coral, turtles, eels, sharks and rays and in the deeper water scuba divers can see dolphins as well as the impressive humpback and sperm whales. There are also tour operators which run night dives for the more experienced divers.

Once you’ve exhausted all of the water pursuit options you may want to consider taking a day trip to Jozani Forest or you may choose to go on a spice tour, renowned on this island.
