The Waterberg mountain range, incorporating many rivers, streams and swamps, stretches for 150 kilometres in a long arc from Thabazimbi in the West, Nylstroom in the centre to Potgietersrus in the east. Apart from the spectacular scenery of the mountains themselves, there are many game sanctuaries, nature reserves and farms.
Vaalwater is the central village of the Waterberg area, the heart of the Bushveld region. The Waterberg has been described as South Africa’s best keep secret. The area has been inhabited over hundreds of thousand years and is also one of the most important San Rock Rock Art areas in South Africa.
Its rugged beauty, together with its diversity in plant and animal life, has led to the development of several exciting eco-tourism projects such as the biosphere reserve - the Waterberg Nature Conservancy - and the amalgamation of conservation areas in order to protect more than 150,000 hectares of the Waterberg-habitat. The name Waterberg refers to the fact that the mountains in the area serve as water reservoirs for the arid region.

The area is home to 75 mammal species including big game such as elephant, lion, white and black rhino, hippo, leopard and buffalo. African python and the Nile crocodile are also resident, it is a birdwatchers’ paradise with more than 300 bird species.
Activities in Waterberg Mountains
Join an organised game drive from one of the various lodges within the area. There is an equestrian centre offering guided horse back safaris. Other activities include hiking, bird watching, mountain biking, fishing, quad biking and 4x4 trails.

Getting Around
The Waterberg Mountain area is part of the Bushveld district of the Limpopo Province, a two and a half hour drive north from Johannesburg on the N1. Some of the area is only accessible by 4x4 due to the rough road conditions.
