Vinales is a small picturesque town in the heart of Cuba’s tobacco growing region in the Vinales Valley. Located in the Pinar del Río Province, the valley is an outstanding landscape covering an area of 132 km² featuring karst formations, or rocky hills, known locally as mogotes.
The mogotes are irregularly shaped steep-sided hills that can rise as high as 300m. Due to its stunning landscape, the valley has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since November 1999.
Much of the valley's flora and fauna is endemic with species including the cork palm and birds like the bee hummingbird, Cuban trogon, cartacubas, nightingales and Cuban grassquits.

The valley also has numerous caverns, among which Cueva del Indio, Cueva de San Miguel and Cueva de Santo Tomas are the most impressive.
Cueva de Santo Tomas has been classified among the largest caverns in Latin America, with more than 45 km of galleries. As well as exploring the caves, the valley has many opportunities for climbing and hiking.
