Located at the base of a circle of mountains, the capital of Bravo – Vila Nova Sintra – is undoubtedly one of the most delightful and beautiful places in the Archipelago. This clean and relaxed town has typical local houses adorned with many varieties of flowers. Hibiscus trees line streets and roads are paved with cobblestones.
The town was named after the Portuguese town of Sintra. One of the most rewarding ways to discover the island is on foot. Several short and half day circular hikes start and end in Vila Nova Sintra, ranging from 3 km to 10 km, many of which pass through the village of Mato Grande.
Attractions in Vila Nova Sintra
There are no particular highlights in the town itself – although the central garden is well tended and the main square ‘Jardim Eugenio Tavares’ is a focal point. Vila Nova Sintra is ideal as a centre-base for island exploration with several interesting villages located close by, accessible by local alaguer or on foot via circular walks.
