The Verdon Gorges - Les Gorges du Verdon locally - sit magnificently in central Provence, bordering the departments of Var and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. Another name is the Grand Canyon of Verdon and this is a name which is not inappropriate - they are, quite simply, breathtaking.
At a depth of 700m, this is the deepest limestone gorge in Europe, set at the point where Mediterranean France meets the foothills of the Alps. Carved by the Verdon River from ancient limestone the turquoise river passes at its most impressive between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Ste-Marie.
Attractions in Verdon Gorge
The area has become a magnet for walkers, climbers and lovers of water sports and is an outdoor lovers' playground with dramatic views, rock-climbing, kayaking, canyoning, caving, ropes course, fishing and boat trips all popular. For the the less adventurous why not drive around the top - 130km on roads that reward with dramatic views.
There are many panoramic viewpoints including the amazing examples from the foot of the Rougon village, the Escalès ridge and cliffs, the Saint-Croix lake and the Galetas, or if you find yourself in the canyon rather than on its rim head to the particularly renowned Styx du Verdon section. The Sentier Martel path has some 15km that through the canyon, between the Point Sublime and the Chalet de la Maline; whilst vertiginous it makes a great hike.

After a memorable week in Provence and Fabregas, the highlight was unquestionably the Gorge du Verdon. I've seen the Grand Canyon in the USA, and this is Europe's equivalent - awesome! Hire a kayak, pedalo or canoe and spend a few hours exploring the gorge on the river - you won't be disappointed. The river is busy in August, but nevertheless with near 30 degree weather and a hot sun - the river is great for a cooling swim. I thoroughly enjoyed this place - a real European gem!
