Capital of the east, Van gives its name to the 3750km sq lake 4 km away and provides visitors with some fantastic highlights of a visit to the east. Notable amongst these is Lake Van itself and the little island of Akdamar with its must-see church. The city has an Urartian history and there is a museum and citadel to explore.
Whilst Van styles itself as modern Turkey’s eastern capital it indeed was capital of the Urartians in the 9th century BCE. The city which is some 4km from the shores of its famous lake is overlooked by a rocky bluff, crowned by the city’s Urartian fort, a citadel with four concentric rows of defensive walls.
The lake is simply beautiful and changes colour depending on the time of day and the season. Akdamar Island sits off its southern shore in the middle and on it the beautiful Church of the Holy Cross, the highlight of any visit to Van.
Attractions in Van
Lake Van captivates all who visit, the ever-changing colours of its waters and dramatic skyline make for a beautiful picture when combined with the chief draw of the area, Akdamar Islands’ Church of the Holy Cross. A boat ride across the lake to Akdamar is a treat not to be missed and is easily arranged. Other attractions in the area include the Urartian fortress at Çavuştepe, and the highly recommended Hoşap Castle a little further along the same road which gives Işakpaşa Palace competition for most beautifully-located fortress in Turkey. Van’s museum holds relics from the area’s Urartian past and is worth visiting.
Activities in Van
Sightseeing in the Van area can fill around two days with one day devoted to the city, lake and its attractions and another for Çavuştepe and Hoşap Castle, best visited on an organised tour with local guide. Alternatively time can be saved if visited as part of an organised tour as you effectively have your own transport.
Relaxing
Nightlife in Van is very low key with little on offer though there are some excellent local-style restaurants.
Getting Around
A driver guide is a good idea as this will enable better use of time, gives good historical perspective and provides good value for money. Domulşes are available for the trip to Akdamar.
