The smallest of the three Bay Islands, Utila is less commercial than its neighbour Roatan. Utila has far fewer beaches but more than makes up for this in diving. Known mostly as a place you can come to dive cheaper than on Roatan, and possibly the cheapest place on the planet, the island of Utila is a Mecca for backpackers.

East Harbour or just Utila, the island's town, is located between two lagoons, across from the lower of the two are the more exclusive and expensive dive resorts, relatively new to the island. The paved main road out of town eventually becomes a dirt road leading to Blue Bayou, a favourite hangout among backpackers, where diving can be done as cheaply as anywhere on the Bay Islands.

The focus of the island is undoubtedly scuba-diving, but there are some other ways to pass the time, other than sunbathing. You could hike up Pumpkin Hill for the views, or swing your hammock in one of the 12 nearby cays. And there is the idiosyncratic pleasure of a visit to Austrian Gunter’s Driftwood Gallery.
