Bound by the Orange River and the Kalahari, Upington is the principal city in the Northern Region and an ideal winter holiday resort with all the modern conveniences that you may require. Also it is conveniently situated on the major routes to Namibia and Kalahari, Augrabies, Fish River Canyon, and Northern Cape. The city reaches an elevation of 835 metres and is the closest large centre to the Augrabies Falls, arguably the greatest of South African waterfalls. The landscape is very arid but the soil is fertile and crops such as fruit are grown in irrigated fields. The area is best known for its export-quality grapes, raisins and wines, which are cultivated on the rich flood plains of the Orange river.

Situated on the banks of the Orange River, Upington was founded in 1884 and named after Sir Thomas Upington, Attorney-General of the Cape. The town originated as a mission station established in 1875 and was run by Reverend Schröder.
