Umm Qais, biblical Gadara, is one of those out-of-the-way spots that visitors are amazed aren’t on the tourist trail. A combination of a well-preserved theatre, underground tombs, an abandoned village and superb views make this a must see for anyone with time for a visit.
The bible tells us that at Gadara Jesus cast out demons from two men into a herd of swine. The town sits in a prominent position high above the Sea of Galilee and prospered as part of the Decapolis, the league of 10 trading cities of the region that was prominent during Roman times; its heyday was in the 1st and 2nd centuries.
Gadara fell into decline in the 7th century at the beginning of Islamic rule and this was hastened by damaging earthquakes in the 8th century until a now-abandoned Ottoman village was built on the ruins, but it too lies abandoned.
Attractions in Umm Qais
The main feature of the site is the 3000-seat Western Theatre, built of black basalt it is an impressive site and has been well restored. Explore too the subterranean tombs, the Decumanus Maximus – the road leading west from the city linking other important cities to Gadara - the Basilica terrace and the excellent little museum housed in what was the Ottoman governor’s house and which has displays from the site including a statue of what is believed to be the patron of the city, the goddess Tyche.
Activities in Umm Qais
A visit can, with a very early start from Amman, be combined with a trip to Jerash. A better idea is to visit as part of a wider tour through northern Jordan. Allow 2hrs to explore the site and enjoy the views.
Relaxing
The view from the terrace of the site restaurant is amazing, looking out over Galilee. Also worth a quiet moment is the theatre.
Getting Around
For those with their own transport visit as part of a wider tour through northern Jordan or as part of a day trip to Jerash (59km away). The large town of Irbid lies 25km away from Umm Qais and regular service taxis run from there on a when-full basis to the village.
