The most important art collection in Italy and one of the richest in the world. Started in 1580 by Vasari and completed by Buontalenti it contains much of the fundamental production of Tuscan artistic schools from the 13th century onward, as well as works by Venetian, Roman, Emilian, German, Flemish, Spanish and French painters. A stunning art collection.
The work of the architect Vasari can be seen all over Florence. Along with the famous Corridor built for the Medicis above the Ponte Vecchio Vasari also designed the city's most impressive museum, the Uffizi Gallery, the Galleria degli Uffizi in Italian.
Cosimo I de' Medici gave the order for its construction in the 16th century, ostensibly to house the offices of Florence's magistrates, the museum is now home to the largest collection of Italian and Florentine Renaissance art in the world.
The interior is split into a series of rooms, grouped by school or artistic period in a way as to showcase the advancement art though the ages. It is essential to book your ticket in advance as this is one f the city’s top attractions. Don’t miss the views from the upper floor gallery over Florence to the Duomo.
