Turrialba is a peaceful little town located beneath the Turrialba Volcano and its surrounding Turrialba National Park (Parque Nacional Volcan Turrialba).

Sitting in the rural countryside of the lush Central Valley, just over 50 km east from the Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose, Turrialba is a popular place to stay for people who wish to explore the nearby volcanoes, National Parks and Reserves, join an adrenaline-packed white water rafting trip on the Reventazón and Pacuare rivers, or visit the fascinating Guayabo National Monument – Costa Rica’s Pre-Colombian ruins.

The small town of Turrialba developed and prospered as a result of the building of the railroad to the Caribbean, and its architectural and ethnic makeup is different from other towns in the region, giving the place an individual feel.  Declared a City of National Archeological Interest, this town is the entrance to the Costa Rican Caribbean.

Two universities are located in Turrialba: the Tropical Agronomy Research and Learning Centre (CATIE), which is renowned on an international level, and the University of Costa Rica.

Turrialba’s outskirts contain appealing rural communities such as Santa Cruz, where homemade Turrialba Cheese is produced, as well as the rapids of the Reventazón and Pacuare rivers.
