Tungurahua is an active stratovolcano located in the Cordillera Central of Ecuador. The volcano gives its name to the province of Tungurahua. Volcanic activity restarted in 1999 and is ongoing as of 2008[update] with major eruptions on August 16, 2006 and on February 6, 2008.
Tungurahua, literaly throat of fire, is Ecuador's 10th-highest peak (5016 metres) and an active stratovolcano. It is located in the Cordillera Central of the Andes of central Ecuador, 140 kilometres south of the capital Quito, and is part of the Sangay National Park. The volcano gives its name to the province of Tungurahua. .

Travellers can enjoy nearby mountains namely the Chimborazo (6 267 metres) and El Altar (5 319 metres). You can also visit the thermal springs town Baños (1 800 metres). Other nearby towns include Ambato and Riobamba. You can also visit Sangay National Park.

They include climbing, camping, and walking. Tungurahua can be climbed year round with best seasons being December-January and July-August.
